After learning about the events of Sept. 11, 2001, second graders at Apache Junction Unified School District's Four Peaks Elementary School felt compelled to do something.
The students, not even born when the United States was attacked by terrorists, decided to honor member of the Apache Junction Fire Department. The students in Shannon Miller's class wanted to thank the firefighters and provide them with something to help local fire victims.
Miller's class joined with other second-graders at Four Peaks Elementary School to create thank you cards for the firefighters and collected more than 200 stuffed animals.
According to a release, "AJFD Fire Chief Paul Bourgeois thanked the students for their support and generosity, calling them heroes as well for wanting to help their community."
