Austin Kennedy, a National Junior ROTC cadet at Apache Junction High School, will receive the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement on Wednesday at the district office.

The award will be given by retired Army Major Frederick Ferguson, the only living recipient in Arizona of the Medal of Honor. The Bronze Cross is only bestowed upon 50 cadets in the United States each year.

Kennedy was recommended for the honor because of his academic excellence (a 4.0 GPA), outstanding military leadership (staff position and completion of Leadership Academy) and participation on the NJROTC Varsity Marksmanship team.

The award is given by a Medal of Honor recipient who, as recipient of that award, is a member of the Legion of Valor. Major Ferguson was recognized with the Medal of Honor for volunteering to fly his helicopter in and evacuate wounded soldiers while under heavy enemy fire in Vietnam.

The ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Governing Board Room of the District Administrative Center at 1575 W. Southern Ave., Apache Junction.
