After stalling on "American Idol" twice in the Hollywood rounds, Janelle Arthur sized up her options before auditioning a third time.

"I questioned whether I should (audition) this year. I almost didn't ... but I have something to prove to myself. You should always keep on trying and not give up," said the fresh-faced 22-year in a thick drawl.

This week, Arthur finally broke the barrier and made the cut beyond the Hollywood round -- the top 40 singers.

It wasn't easy for the Oliver Springs, Tenn., resident to try for a third time.

With the possibility of being eliminated, Arthur put her heart out on the line one more time, perhaps one last time for "Idol."

"It's tough," she said. "After going through (the Hollywood rounds) three times, I believe they would have seen you enough and heard you enough by now if they really wanted you."

All three times she made it through the open auditions of "Idol" she earned a "golden ticket," taking her to the Hollywood rounds. Each of the two previous times she came so close and yet remained so far away.

And in today's TV environment, Arthur was fully aware that there are other places she could have gone to get her big career break.

"I could have gone to another (singing) competition show. I thought about it," she said, "but I really just love 'American Idol.' I believe in the show.

"I believe in the careers it produces. I just felt like I should go back there."

Next week's action begins Wednesday at 8 p.m. EST. Also in the week ahead (check local listings):
