The flash and boom of fireworks will become more common as July 4th approaches — which means taking extra precautions to keep your pets comfortable and safe.

Pet owners should consider: Make sure pets have identification tags so you can be contacted if your animal gets away.

Do not take pets to activities that include fireworks.

Leave pets inside with a television or radio on to help cover fireworks noise.

Close blinds to minimize the light that gets indoors.

If your pet escapes, go to the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control shelter at 2630 W. 8th St. in Mesa. If you find a lost pet, call animal control at (480) 644-2268 to request a pickup.

The shelter is normally open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The office will be closed July 4, and calls will be returned July 5.

"If you find a lost pet, call animal control at (480) 644-2268 to request a pickup."

PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS EXCEPT AS A LAST RESORT!!!

If possible, consider holding on to the animal and placing a "Lost" ad on craigslist or some other local publication.

Animals surrendered to Animal Control, barring those few that get adopted, are most likely to be euthanized rather quickly (not the department's fault, they are overwhelmed).

I must say I am disappointed that Animal Control - not just in Mesa but EVERY East Valley city - was closed on the busiest day of the year for loose animals.
