Karl Sup, a computer software engineer for JDA Software in Scottsdale, remembers friend Mike Sullivan who was among 156 people killed in the crash of Northwest Flight 255 on August 16, 1987 as it left the Detroit Metropolitan-Wayne County Airport on its way back to Phoenix. Sullivan, 27, of Chandler and Sup, now 48, of Mesa, met playing sand volleyball at Minder Binder’s in Tempe nearly 30 years ago. Of the 156 people who died in the plane crash, 110 were from Arizona and 32 were from the East Valley. Cecelia Cichan, then 4, formerly of Tempe, was the sole survivor in that crash. She will speak out about the crash for the first time in a forthcoming documentary, “Sole Survivor,” about the sole survivors of plane crashes. (Photo courtesy of Karl Sup).
