Instead of wilting in the heat, budding artists can thrive this summer in an unlikely wellspring of creativity: a Phoenix hotel.

Art Unraveled, a nine-day convention for those who love using scissors, glue, paint, fabric, clay and other materials to create things, will bring more than 50 teaching artists to town to lead a slew of workshops.

“There are more than 120 (workshops) in a huge variety — jewelry-making, collage, painting, book-making, paper-making. We have full-day and multi-day workshops, and evening workshops for people who work and can’t get there until later in the evening,” says Linda Young, owner and organizer of Art Unraveled.

Instructors include the Valley’s well-known Kathy Cano-Murillo (leading “Graffiti Style Portrait Stencil”) and New York City’s Seth Apter, known for art journaling and the book “The Pulse of Mixed Media: Secrets and Passions of 100 Artists Revealed.”

Extras include nightly demonstrations and make-and-take sessions. A “Shopping Extravaganza” will feature about 60 vendors selling handmade art and all manner of new and vintage materials for use in your own work.

Young started out as a scrapbooker but soon expanded her artistic interests and skill set, eventually fitting a large-scale Houston art workshop into a family road trip. Exhilarated by the experience, she wondered why there was nothing comparable in Phoenix. Two years later, she started Art Unraveled.

Now in its eleventh year, Young says some workshops sell out almost as soon as registration opens each January, and people travel from Venezuela, Japan, Germany, Mexico and Saudi Arabia to attend.

Yet she always gets newbies who say they’ve never heard of her giant art party — and they fit right in. The crowd contains home hobbyists and professional artists, and the listing for each workshop indicates the skill level students should possess.

Registration is open as long as space is available. Mailed registrations must reach Art Unraveled by July 26. Walk-in registrations will be accepted at a July 29 “Meet the Artists” event and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day of Art Unraveled.
