2 Bookmans activities to check out
Mesa’s beloved used bookseller not only offers pre-loved books and music, they also offer an eclectic lineup of activities. These two made us smile:
Fabulous Fourth of July Crafts
If you’re not one of those DIY folks with more supplies than Hobby Lobby, then your kids will love spending an hour cutting, gluing and creating a patriotic piece celebrating the United States of America. The best part is Bookmans cleans up the mess. These free events fill quickly, so arrive early to get a spot.
DETAILS >> 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 2. Bookmans Mesa, 1056 S. Country Club Drive. Free. (480) 835-0505 or Bookmans.com/stores/mesa.
Young at Heart YA Book Club for Adults
Let’s face it, the young adult (YA) genre has some pretty great stories — “The Hunger Games,” “Divergent,” “Harry Potter,” so it should come as no surprise that lots of adults like to read them too. If you’re one of them, you might enjoy this monthly book club sponsored by Literologie and Bookmans Mesa that meets every third Thursday to discuss a YA selection. The June meeting covers “Butter” by Erin Jade Lang.
DETAILS >> 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 19. Bookmans Mesa, 1056 S. Country Club Drivew. Free. (480) 835-0505 or Bookmans.com/stores/mesa.

National craft store chain Michaels has teamed with seven leading North American museums to create Passport to Imagination 2014, a low-cost, in-store summer program where kids ages 5-12 can explore culture through crafting.
This year’s theme is Museum Road Trip, and each week will feature a different museum, with projects inspired by the museum and its exhibits. The institutions are the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, the Georgia Aquarium, The Field Museum, The Museum at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), the Denver Art Museum, the Pima Air & Space Museum and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
The programs take place 10 a.m. to noon Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from June 16 through Aug. 2 at all Michaels locations. Each session costs $2 per child.
Projects teach lessons on natural history, technology, marine life, textiles and art.
During the week of June 16, the first 50 participants at each store will receive a free souvenir album. For more information, go to Michaels.com/Passport.
