The Phoenix Animal Care Coalition will partner with the Franciscan Renewal Center - The Casa in Paradise Valley to host the St. Francis Festival, Blessing of the Animals and Pet Adopt A Thon from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 22-23. PetSmart Charities is sponsoring the event at the center, 5302 E. Lincoln Drive.

More than 70 animal rescue groups are expected to be on hand with purebred and mixed breed dogs, cats, rabbits, small critters and even rescued horses up for adoption. According to a news release, more animals are being abandoned now due to the state of the nation's economy. "These pets are at the mercy of this community," the release said. "They wait with hope behind bars for a second chance at life."

The blessing of the animals, a tradition that started years ago, will take place at noon and 2 p.m. both days of the event. There will also be a dog wash, silent auction and raffle prizes with all proceeds benefitting the PACC911 Emergency Medical Fund, which gives aid to animal welfare groups. And, the Arizona Animal Welfare League's Mobile Vaccine Clinic will be there to provide low cost microchipping and shots for dogs and cats. Refreshments, including grilled sausage, hamburgers and veggie burgers, will be available for sale.

For more information, visit www.pacc911.org or call Tia Sylvis at (602) 228-1832.
