Max was unrecognizably swollen from a snake bite when he was taken in by the Arizona Humane Society. But now he's on his way to becoming a therapy dog trained to assist veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries.
Max is being trained as a special companion for a veteran through the nonprofit Soldier's Best Friend organization, which was formed last year. Through its partnership with the group, the humane society also placed Cody, an almost 2-year-old, yellow Labrador retriever, who was surrendered by his owner, into the program to become a "demo" service dog helping teach others the ropes.
