Remember the timeless scene in “The Sound of Music” when the Von Trapp children put on a puppet show? Ever wish that you could witness those puppets in real life? Well you’re in luck, because the same marionettes are making their way to town.

The world-renowned Salzburg Marionettes will make their Mesa debut Oct. 23-25. Ten puppeteers from Salzburg, Austria, will bring their newest production, “Alice in Wonderland,” to life at Mesa Arts Center.

“The lifelike puppets are captivating; audiences experience the illusion of watching real people, thanks to the fine costumes and expressive detail on the sculptured puppet faces,” says Casey Blake, spokeswoman for Mesa Arts Center. “The Marionettes carry forward an enduring and long-beloved art form. This is an extremely rare treat for audiences of all ages.”

The Salzburg Marionettes are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year and are one of the oldest continuously performing marionette theatres in the world. The marionettes perform a large repertoire of operas, ballets and productions for both children and adults.
