There are a few things that, over the years, have become traditions for Valley residents around the holidays: ZooLights. Las Noches de las Luminarias. Hale Centre Theatre’s “A Christmas Carol.” And “The Nutcracker” by Ballet Etudes.

The Gilbert dance studio has been staging the timeless tale for 26 years now, and it remains a top pick for families looking to spend a little quality time with swirling snowflakes, sugar plum fairies and life-size mice.

The show opens the evening after Thanksgiving. A treat for the eyes and ears with vibrant costumes and the music of Tchaikovsky, it’s an endearing best bet for kicking off the Christmas season.

DETAILS >> Opens 7 p.m. Nov. 23 and runs through Dec. 2. Chandler Center for the Arts, 250 N. Arizona Ave. $20-$25. (480) 782-2680 or ChandlerCenter.org. Also runs Dec. 14-16 at Mesa Arts Center, 1 E. Main St. $22-$27. (480) 644-6500 or MesaArtsCenter.com.
