Medieval Mayhem Renaissance Faire

If a certain Renaissance-themed event in Apache Junction is the Disneyland of Middle Ages enthusiasts, this sixth annual “faire” is more like Magic Springs, Adventureland USA or Silver Dollar City.

A quainter, less done-to-death cousin of the Valley’s big ren fest, Medieval Mayhem blurs history and reality, bringing together Vikings, Celtic warriors, knights in armor, a royal court, elves, fairies and pirates — in a setting with few bells and whistles save pine-peppered scenery and cooler temperatures.

A variety of music and dance troupes will perform, and you can catch the truly unique spectacles of sword fighting and the Royal Rumble — a fight to the last knight standing. There are also food, beer, wine and merchandise vendors.

DETAILS >> 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 12 and 13, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 14. Mountain Meadows Recreation Complex, 1101 N. Woodland Road. $10 for adults, $5 for kids ages 5-13. AZmayhem.com.

WILLCOX

Sweet Corn Extravaganza and Peach Mania

Willcox fruit and veggie farm Apple Annie’s grows supersweet bi-color varieties of corn, which you can snatch up already-picked at the farm stand or eat on-site, hot, roasted and slathered in butter.

A few miles away, the farm’s orchards are ripe with 17 types of peaches. Visitors and their leashed, well-behaved pets can take a wagon ride out to the trees to pick their own, or select peaches from farm stands.

An all-you-can-eat peaches and pancakes breakfast is served 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays, and apple-smoked burgers, complete with a slice of homemade pie and ice cream, are served 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There’s also a store with freshly baked pies, apple bread, cookies, muffins and fudge. Free samples of peaches and peach products will be given out.
