Today's Green Minute - Episode 9: Zoo Food

"VertiCrop TM" is the first high-density vegetable growing system in Europe, and it's found at the Paignton Zoo in England. Inside the VertiCrop TM structure are trays on moving conveyors that contain growing vegetables, which can include lettuce, red chard, mixed leaves, edible flowers, wheat grass and barley. The conditions are tightly controlled, so that optimum amounts of sunlight and water can be supplied to the plants. VertiCrop TM could be forerunner to making widespread urban farming a reality. The structure goes a long way to feeding the zoo population, and is an attraction nearly as big as the zoo itself. ...And fresh? The animals are eating vegetables that are fresher than what most humans eat.
