It’s not Rockefeller Center, but CityScape Phoenix, with its Christmas tree, twinkly lights and real outdoor ice rink, is about as close as we can come to a festive urban holiday tableau.
Set to last through Jan. 6, it’s worth the drive downtown at some point this season to skate over the middle of Central Avenue with the tall buildings of Central Phoenix in view.
For those who wish to feel properly wintry, hot chocolate is available steps away at Chloe’s Corner. You can also purchase beer or wine to sip while the kids slip and slide on the ice.
Adult Skate, 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. every Saturday night, dismisses the youngsters in favor of a deejay and ice dancers.
Skate rental wristbands are good for deals at some of the district’s retailers, which could come in handy for Christmas shopping or a meal while you’re there. Urban Outfitters, Charming Charlie, The Arrogant Butcher, Starbucks and Stand Up Live Comedy Club are among the names that fill CityScape’s two city blocks.
Consider the $12 skate rental fee a gift; proceeds from the rink will be donated to Phoenix Suns Charities, United Methodist Outreach Ministries Phoenix, The Breast Cancer Society, Xavier and Brophy College Preparatory, Arizona Science Center and Arizona Animal Welfare League.
