If there was ever a time to indulge in utter fantasy, this season of sugar plum fairies, toy-making elves, dancing nutcrackers, and red-nosed reindeer is it.

That’s why we’re not minding the drive — as long as we can pair it with other errands — to show the kids and visiting relatives the Wonderland of Oz Gingerbread Village at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa in Phoenix.

Set up in the resort’s lobby, the 40-foot-by-20-foot village features scenes from the classic Judy Garland film, including Munchkinland, the poppy fields outside the Emerald City and the castle of the Wicked Witch of the West.

Made by the resort’s award-winning pastry team, it contains 800 pounds of cookie dough and 500 pounds of chocolate, candies, gumdrops, icing and cookies.

An actress dressed as Dorothy will interact with visitors 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 26-29. Actors portraying the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion will accompany her as they are available.

The display is free to look at — just don’t try swiping a fingertip of frosting.

DETAILS >> Open 24 hours daily through Dec. 29. JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa, 5350 E. Marriott Drive, Phoenix. (480) 293-5000 or JWDesertRidgeResort.com
