Several thousand seasoned collectors, families and kids are expected to attend the 42nd annual Flagg Gem and Mineral Show set for Jan. 3-5 in the west parking lot of Mesa Community College at Dobson Road and Southern Avenue.

As always, this year’s event has a strong emphasis on children’s activities.

“Children can become interested in science through minerals, crystals and fossils, and our hope is to encourage their interest,” says Ray Grant, FMF chairman.

Children can learn how to “Make a Fossil” at a station where they can build a collection of 12 samples for $1, and a special fluorescent display will show how certain minerals glow under different wavelengths.

Three 19th century stone tablet maps believed to contain clues to a large treasure are among the show’s highlights.

“These Peralta Stone tablets are a great mystery and very controversial,” says Grant. “Some believe they are the maps that will lead to a Peralta silver treasure. Others think they contain clues to some lost gold mine.”

Sponsored by the non-profit Flagg Mineral Foundation (FMF), the family friendly event is the largest gem and mineral show in the Valley and features more than 100 dealers of minerals, fossils, gems and lapidary materials.
