An exhibit on display for a limited time at the Arizona Jewish Historical Society’s Cutler Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center is bringing visitors face-to-face with lifelike, three-dimensional renderings of real-life Holocaust survivors.
“We Remember: The Holocaust Art of Robert Sutz,” an exhibit co-sponsored by The Phoenix Holocaust Survivors’ Association, features “life masks,” or realistic likenesses, of people who lived through the Nazi era.
As a teenager, the artist learned that his father’s entire family had been murdered at the Auschwitz and Treblinka concentration camps. Determined that they and millions of other victims and survivors of the Holocaust should not be forgotten, Sutz has spent 20 years making the masks.
The museum is open noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 122 E. Culver St., Phoenix. Guided tours of the exhibit are available on Sundays. The cost is $2 per person. For information, call (602) 241-7870 or visit AZJHS.org.
