Like so many things in our modern world, the bookmobile has gone digital.

For years, the vehicles, designed for use as mobile libraries, have helped people gain access to traditionally bound, tangible reading material.

A new, 74-foot-long incarnation of the old idea will help residents understand how to check out electronic books March 12 at Mesa’s Red Mountain Branch Library and March 13 at Mesa’s Main Library. It will be parked from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on those days outside the libraries.

Housed inside an 18-wheeler, the Digital Bookmobile is equipped with interactive learning stations that let visitors search their library’s digital collection and sample eBooks, audiobooks, music and videos. A gadget gallery featuring iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, NOOK, Sony and Kindle devices helps visitors discover which gadgets are compatible with their library’s digital collection.
