In this techno-centric age, it’s easy to forget about tangible things like paper, pipe cleaners, bits of wire and the endless array of possibilities they present. “Imaginate” at the Arizona Science Center reminds us of the simple joy of puttering and the inherent value it holds for the next generation of innovators, engineers and world-changers.

Featuring five learning stations, each focused on a different aspect of innovation, this 6,000-square-foot traveling exhibit provides an environment for kids and families to do hands-on activities like build paper airplanes, test their “flying” ability, create a stop-motion animation film, assemble automated sculptures and experiment with the properties of various materials.

Also featured in the exhibit is the Imagination Playground — a room filled with gigantic Tinkertoy-like blocks where kids are confined only by the limits of their imaginations.

“Imaginate is a fun, highly interactive exhibition that focuses on skills that are essential for the next generation of innovators,” says Chevy Humphrey President and CEO of Arizona Science Center in a written statement. “It’s especially interesting to educators because the activities encourage students to consider questions they had never before asked. Where else can you have your students engaged in inquiry-based learning, combining creativity with sciences?”

The exhibit is open until Jan. 5, 2014, and while it has something for all ages, it is ideal for kids ages 8-12. Tickets are $9, plus the cost of general admission and include access to the Imagination Playground.
