Give us live music, face-painting, replicas of key American buildings and monuments, and a fireworks show, and we’re there.
It’s Constitution Fair, going on Saturday, Sept. 22, in Gilbert. Held in honor of the national Citizenship Day and Constitution Week observances, it’s expected to draw 10,000 people looking for a wholesome, educational and affordable night out.
From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., you’ll find local musicians, magicians and other performers on stages throughout the fair, which is anchored by large inflatable replicas of places like the White House and the Supreme Court Building.
“The Washington Monument — that one goes up for 30 or 40 feet; it’s pretty cool. You can actually walk into Independence Hall and see photos of the signers of the Constitution,” says Jared Taylor, an organizer of the festival and candidate for Gilbert town council.
Carnival booths will appeal to kids, while an area called Town Square is for politically engaged visitors. That’s where political candidates and advocacy groups for a range of issues will discuss and hand out information.
“It’s sectioned off, so the candidates aren’t right in people’s faces, but you can go in there and learn about various things if you’re interested in that; it is Constitution Week, after all, so we wanted a presence for that side (of our government), too,” says Taylor.
At 8 p.m., up-and-coming recording artist Alex Boyé will give a patriotic concert with a choir in the background. The evening is capped with a fireworks finale starting around 9 p.m.
Seating is on the lawn, so bring blankets or folding chairs to sit on and mosquito repellent.
