A new comedy series is aiming to fill the void left by the shuttered Tempe Improv comedy club — and improve the audience’s surroundings.

“I like the idea of presenting comedy in a high-quality venue,” says Tony Vicich, a local comedy promoter and owner of ComedySchools.com. He’s presenting the series in conjunction with Tempe Center for the Arts (TCA).

“Often patrons of comedy go out to a club to find they are in a bar or backroom of a hotel. The slipshod way these rooms are put together take away from their experience. At TCA, you feel you have entered a Broadway theater.”

A “Best of the West” show will open the series Nov. 9 with five comics, including some from the Jimmy Kimmel Show, Showtime and Hollywood’s Comedy Store.

Subsequent shows will feature a fast-moving format with 10 comics performing for 10 minutes, “Kevin Odea’s Comedy Circus” — a sold-out hit when it ran at the Tempe Improv — and an improv show, in which the audience participates with the troupes on stage.

The series kicks off 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 and continues on consecutive Fridays through Nov. 30 at Tempe Center for the Arts, 700 W. Rio Salado Parkway. Tickets are $10-$15 and are available through the TCA Box Office, by phone at (480) 350-2822 or online at tca.ticketforce.com.
