Words: Without them, a lot of white space. With them, an endless world of possibility. Gilbert’s Art Intersection examines these possibilities with their new exhibit “Word Up: Artists Using Language,” opening Saturday and displaying text and language as components of visual art.

The art ranges from broadsides — single sheets of paper with a poem or ballad printed on them — to illegible scribbling.

The work of Dan Mayer and John Risseeuw, prominent educators in the field of book arts and fine-printing, highlight the exhibit. Their work is joined by that from their past and present students, all of whom have an Arizona connection.

Beverages will be served at the opening reception.

DETAILS >> Opening reception is 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1; exhibit on display through Oct. 17. Art Intersection, 207 N Gilbert Road, Suite 201, Gilbert. Free. (480) 361-1118 or http://www.artintersection.com/.
