Nothing tastes like summer quite the way watermelon does. When you can get it as an Italian ice, a margarita or an agua fresca, it becomes nearly impossible to resist. But who wants to when confronted with the yummy and affordable options listed below?
WATERMELON ITALIAN ICE
If you’re not a Rita’s regular, you’ll be one after trying one of their freshly-made Italian ices ($2.70 for a regular, $3.24 for a large), which blend fresh fruit with crushed ice for a better-than-your-average snowcone-like treat. The ices are mixed fresh daily, so call ahead or go on their website to make sure the watermelon flavor is on the menu.
WATERMELON CUCUMBER BASIL MARGARITA
1840 S. Val Vista Drive, Mesa, (480) 813-8752 or tqla.com
This refreshing margarita, costing $9 regularly and $6.75 during happy hour, is made with 100-percent blue agave silver tequila that’s been infused with real watermelon, cucumber and basil. Add to that triple sec, fresh lime juice, simple syrup and real watermelon puree — garnished with a cucumber wheel and slice of watermelon — and TQLA is so confident you’ll like it, they’ve made this cocktail their margarita of the month. They’ll serve it through July and possibly into August.
WATERMELON AGUA FRESCA OR PALETA
Flor De Michoacan
734 E. Main St., Mesa, (480) 615-1346 or FlorDeMichoacan.com
There’s nothing quite like a paleta (frozen fruit bar) or an agua fresca (chilled fruit drink) to cool off with during a boiling Arizona afternoon, and Flor de Michoacan in Mesa has lots of flavor options, including watermelon. Aguas frescas runs $1.95 for a small and $2.60 for a large. Paletas are $1.50 each.
