Q: Where do you like to eat out?
A: The first place that comes to mind is House of Tricks in Tempe. I’ve been going there for years. But one of the bartenders there started a restaurant in Chandler called Vintage 95. I fell in love with it right away. The atmosphere, the service — he’s done a great job, and I go back there quite a bit now.
Q: How is the food?
A: The food is really great, and that’s also true of House of Tricks. They change their menu, so every time you go, you’re surprised. When you cook a lot and deal with food and menus a lot, it’s nice to be surprised. There are always options on those menus — so many good options, it’s hard to decide what to have. I love that feeling. That’s what I want when people come to my restaurant, so many good choices you just can’t decide.
Q: Do you have any other top restaurants?
A: One of my favorite places in the Gilbert area is Temari (Fine Japanese Cuisine) sushi. I go there nearly every Sunday night. It’s always good. It’s always consistent. The owner’s almost always there, so you know he cares about his food. When you see an owner there, you know they care about what’s going on.
Another place I really like is Joyride Taco Shop (Gilbert). I’ve only been there once, but first impressions are so important. I walked in, and boom — that bartender was so great, you just wanted to sit down and talk with him. They had some great drinks — interesting summer drinks — on their chalkboard, so there was something to connect with right away, something you wanted to try right away.
