Caffe Boa (398 S. Mill Ave., Tempe [480] 968-9112). Tasty offerings at this red-brick Italian wine bar include paninis, pastas and a very tasty tiramisu. Looking for lighter fare? Boa has a nice list of tapas and flights as well as one of the best happy hours in town. $$$

Cork (4991 S. Alma School Road, Chandler [480] 883-3773). An upscale but comfortable place for small plates, original entrees and an outstanding, Wine Spectator-recognized wine selection, Cork also features one of the top Sunday brunches in the East Valley — bottomless mimosas and bellinis included. $$$

D’Vine Wine Bar & Bistro (2837 N. Power Road, Mesa [480] 654-4171). D’Vine serves such Are-we-still-in-Mesa? dishes as pan-seared ostrich on a cheddar polenta cake topped with a lingonberry jalapeño preserve and escargot sautéed in white wine with cream and bleu cheese tossed with linguine. But simpler fare, such as bruschetta, pizzas and mac-and-cheese don’t disappoint, either. Wine tastings with live music on Tuesdays and monthly wine pairing dinners complete the package, making D’Vine — a 2011 Best of East Valley award winner — the most exciting restaurant in Mesa. Down Under Wines & Bistro (1422 W. Warner Road, Gilbert [480] 545-4900). This Aussie-inspired hot spot is known for a fun wine-sipping atmosphere and Australian-Asian fusion bites you won’t see on other menus, such as crocodile potstickers and kangaroo eggrolls. $$

Four Peaks Brewery (1340 E. Eighth St., Tempe [480] 303-9967). Don’t expect the usual bar food here. Four Peaks’ menu includes such impressive offerings as Thai hummus, a Portabella veggie beer bread sandwich and salmon BLT. Oh, and the beer — including the customer fave Kilt Lifter — ain’t half bad, either. Additional location in Scottsdale. $$

Il Vinaio (270 W. Main St., Mesa [480] 649-6476). Owner Cameron Selogie’s beer and wine bar offers an elegant dining experience unique in downtown Mesa. The Tuscan décor, cathedral ceiling and stained glass windows take you halfway to Italy and the Mediterranean-inspired entrées finish the job. $$$

The Living Room Wine Café & Lounge (2475 W. Queen Creek Road, Chandler [480] 855-2848). An atmosphere tailor-made made for hanging out, chatting and sipping wine is the draw here, where happy hour is very popular. The menu includes bruschetta, panini, flatbread chicken pesto pizza, salads and the like. $$

Postino East WineCafe (302 N. Gilbert Road, Gilbert [480] 632-6363). The Gilbert location of Valley-based Postino WineCafe features a lounge area and an outdoor patio and offers the same menu offered at its Phoenix locations. With most prices being under $13 — including bruschetta, panini, soups and salads — menu items are all made with local ingredients and artisan breads. Brunch is available on Saturday and Sunday. Thirty-six wines are available by the glass and 100 by the bottle. Postino, which claims to be the first wine bar in the Valley to serve wine on tap, offers six wines on tap at Postino East. A kids menu is also available.

SanTan Brewing Company (8 S. San Marcos Plaza, Chandler [480] 917-8700). Owner Anthony Canecchia was a head brewer at Four Peaks in Tempe for seven years before taking his talents south to Chandler, where he’s created his own successful hot spot. Housed in historic downtown in an all-brick building with garage-door windows and a large patio, SanTan features six original mainstay and four seasonal brews on tap. Canecchia has also added a twist to pub favorites like the turkey Reuben and jalapeño Caesar salad. $$
