Holiday spirit and spending.

That’s what Glendale hopes to inspire in visitors Saturday during Christmas in July.

“It’s really kind of a highlight to gear shoppers to thinking about starting your Christmas shopping,” says Kim Larson, marketing coordinator for the Glendale. “There’s 157 shopping days until Christmas.”

The festival, which takes place downtown, seems entirely out of place in July when temperatures can top 110.

“It’s so hot outside,” says Larson. “You can get excited and think about the cold weather and the holidays.”

The festivities will begin at the Glendale Visitors Center, where festivalgoers can pick up a free gift bag (which holds an event map and two Christmas-themed gifts). Afterward, businesses, including the Tole Shop and the Creative Quest, will host arts and crafts projects for a nominal fee. Visitors to the Bead Museum will have an opportunity to make bracelets inspired by the holidays and the museum’s collection.

If you need snow to get into the Christmas mood, head over to the Christmas Cottage, where a few fake flakes will fall outside. Owner Brad Muff hosted his own version of Christmas in July last year, which attracted die-hard ornament shoppers and Christmas lovers.

“It’s an early start to shopping and an opportunity to see a lot of things come out for 2007,” says Muff.
