Bettie McCarter is sometimes just as busy during her off hours as when she’s working as a nurse supervisor in Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn’s emergency room.

In her free time, she spends countless hours teaching other nurses and organizing educational and safety programs. And for her efforts, McCarter has been named the state’s Nurse of the Year by the Arizona Emergency Nurses Association.

"I spend a lot of my off time doing those things, but I really enjoy it," she said.

McCarter teaches the Trauma Nurse Core Course and Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course as a volunteer for the state, and recently served as president of the Arizona Emergency Nurses Association. She also participates in programs that provide children with bicycle helmets and educates them on how to ride safely.

NEW HOSPITAL EXECUTIVE SELECTED

In other news, Scottsdale Healthcare has selected Jean Knoedler, formerly a chief operating officer for the Heart Center of Indiana, to head up the hospital system’s newest location on Thompson Peak Parkway, between Loop 101 and Pinnacle Peak Road.

"Jean was responsible for guiding the Heart Center of Indiana through its planning, development, opening and initial operations," said Jeff Norman, Scottsdale Healthcare’s chief operating officer, in a press release. The skills she gained from that experience should assist her in opening the Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak hospital, he added.
