Changing Hands Bookstore (6428 S. McClintock Dr., Tempe,, (480) 730-0205 ) has assembled a world-class group of authors and illustrators to lead summer classes this year:



with J.S. Lewis, co-author of The Grey Griffins series (Ages 11-18)

Tuesdays, June 10, 17, 24 • 3-4:30pm $50 for the series

In this three-part creative writing series led by J.S. Lewis, co-author of the Grey Griffins fantasy novels for

young readers, you will learn to develop compelling heroes and villains that will grab your readers and never let them go. You’ll discuss the importance of a name, the pros and cons of stereotypes and archetypes, techniques of applying personality twists and quirks that will create a deeper connection between your characters

and your readers, and a slew of other methods that will help your characters spring to life.

Evolution, Me and Other Freaks of Nature (Ages 12-18)

Thursday, June 12 • 1-4pm $35

You have a great idea for a novel—now what? Or maybe you’ve always wanted to write a novel but have no clue where to start. Learn the fundamentals of novel-writing and get that manuscript started with Robin Brande, author of Evolution, Me, and Other Freaks of Nature (selected by the American Library

Association as one of the Best Books for Young Adults, 2008).


with Janette Rallison, author of How to Take the Ex Out of Ex-Boyfriend (Ages 12-18)

Thursdays, July 24, 31, August 7 3-4:30pm $50 for the series

Learn about the elements of writing and plot with Janette Rallison, author of thirteen books, seven of which are young adult novels. You’ll learn about point of view and why you need to use it correctly. You’ll also learn about character goals, motivation, and conflict.


with Tony Carrillo, creator of F Minus

Mondays, July 7, 14 • 2-3:30pm $40 for the series

Learn how to draw basic cartoons (people, animals, monsters, anything you can think of!) with Tony Carrillo, whose nationally syndicated comic strip, F Minus, currently runs in more than 100 newspapers. Participants will create their own original comic characters. Come prepared with pencils, pens and drawing paper, and let the cartooning begin!
