This time of year, Valley residents are united by a collective drive: Enjoy the heck out of prime patio season before the heat sets in.

Now, Desert Botanical Garden is giving us one more way to arrive at that first triple-digit day with a satisfied sense of "mission: accomplished."

"Spiked! Thursdays at DBG" are the garden's new, weekly cocktail parties, where bold - sometimes bizarre - artwork, striking desert landscapes and catered food lend a swank, distinctly Southwestern feel to happy hour.

The first cocktail party - already sold out - kicks off at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Subsequent parties continue each Thursday through May 14.

"It's pretty unique because we've never really done entertainment that targets that 21- to 40-year-old crowd. It looks like it's going to be a lot of fun, because tickets are selling fast; it looks like it's going to be pretty popular," says John Sallot, spokesman for the garden.

Centered on the arresting glass artwork of American sculptor Dale Chihuly, the parties take place each week at a different outdoor venue within the garden, where a different Chihuly piece will be on display. The artist's work, featured in the current garden exhibit "Chihuly: The Nature of Glass," has been in demand for nighttime viewings, says Sallot.

The "Spiked!" events will feature cocktails and hors d'oeuvres inspired by each week's chosen art installation, and entertainers will supply live music. Tickets are limited. They can be purchased online, by telephone or in person at the garden admissions booth for $25.
