Mexican art icon Frida Kahlo once said “I leave you my portrait so that you will have my presence all the days and nights that I am away from you.”
Get close to the memory of the late painter beginning Friday, when the Phoenix Fridas, a women’s arts collective inspired by Kahlo, opens an exhibition at Vision Gallery in Chandler.
The show includes an installation of Kahlo’s bedroom, altars and mixed-media artworks by Valley “Fridas” Carmen Guerrero and Kathy Cano-Murillo, among others.
Supplemental free programming includes a June 16 gallery talk on Kahlo’s influence on contemporary artists, a July 9 birthday party for Kahlo, and kids’ artmaking workshops led by the Fridas themselves.
