It’s not every day you get to watch a world champion up close and in action. 2011 World Champion Hoop Dancer Tony Duncan will give two presentations Wednesday at Mesa libraries that will allow you to do just that.
The Mesa resident will perform the popular Hoop Dance, re-creating natural life forms such as the eagle, rattlesnake and butterfly, by deftly wielding a dizzying array of colored hoops.
Duncan, who is of the Apache and Arikara/Hidatsa nations, will also share Native American songs and stories. A Canyon Records recording artist and flutist for the group Estun-Bah, he’s been nominated for a Native American Music Award.
Duncan was a four-time World Champion Teen Hoop Dancer and ranked among the top 10 hoop dancers in the world before capturing this year’s top honor. He has performed throughout America, Europe and Asia, and he recently entertained first lady Michelle Obama and her guests at an event in Washington, D.C.
Admission is free, but space is limited, and the libraries are unable to accommodate non-family groups with more than five children.
