When “Wicked” played ASU Gammage in 2009, it broke box office records, selling out in record time.

The show about the witches of Oz, arriving Wednesday at the Tempe venue, looks to be nearly as big a deal this time around, with scant tickets to be had at the box office or via online ticket brokers.

The two-hour-and-45-minute musical takes audiences back to a time before Dorothy and Toto, when two unlikely friends — one fiery and misunderstood with emerald green skin, the other beautiful, ambitious and popular — grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda, the Good Witch.

“Wicked” is the winner of 35 awards, including a Grammy and three Tonys. It’s also Broadway’s biggest blockbuster, named “the defining musical of the decade” by The New York Times.

While not nearly as kid-friendly as the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz,” Wicked is recommended for audiences age 8 and older.

DETAILS >> Opens at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday; runs through March 11. ASU Gammage, 1200 S. Forest Parkway, Tempe. $26.50-$204.15. (480) 965-3434 or www.asugammage.com.
