Spring and summer is the high season for people turning in unwanted animals, either from litters or due to families moving and going on vacation. Between May and July the Arizona Humane Society took in nearly 6,000 cats and kittens.
The shelters are reaching capacity, so the organization is offering incentives for adoptions. Through Sept. 30, everyone who adopts a cat from the humane society will take home a free cat toy from Phoenixbased Happy Dog Toys.
Pets at the Arizona Humane Society are spayed or neutered and have received vaccinations. Each cat and kitten is sent home with a collar, ID tag, complimentary carrier and a free follow-up examination with a veterinarian.
Cat adoption fees are $75 for kittens ages 4 months and younger, $55 for cats more than 4 months old and "Prime Time" pets — those age 5 and older — are $35.
Adoption counselors are on hand to assist people in selecting a feline companion to meet their lifestyle preferences. All adopters will be carefully screened to ensure proper placement of each pet.
