Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” is heard each week by 4 million listeners on more than 600 public radio stations — not to mention abroad on America One and the Armed Forces Networks.

If you’ve only heard it over the airwaves, or perhaps never at all, you can catch some of the program’s folksy, funny stories and signature music Thursday in Phoenix.

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts brings Keillor, also an accomplished author of more than a dozen books, to the stage at Celebrity Theatre. “A Prairie Home Companion” pianist and music director Rich Dworsky and singer-songwriter Heather Masse will join him.

The trio will share stories and songs about the Midwest and the people of the confounding and much-loved fictional town of Lake Wobegon.

If you ascribe to the idea that the real thing is always better than the movie — in this case, Robert Altman’s 2006 “A Prairie Home Companion,” starring Keillor, Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Woody Harrelson, John C. Reilly and Lindsay Lohan — the audience should be in for a treat.

DETAILS >> 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Celebrity Theatre, 440 N. 32nd St., Phoenix. $59-$69. (480) 499-8587 or  www.scottsdaleperformingarts.org.
