More than a dozen bands, including big-name national acts, will take the stage this week at the second McDowell Mountain Music Festival.
The festival, which opens at noon today and 10 a.m. Saturday, will be at WestWorld of Scottsdale. The lineup includes Bruce Hornsby, Big Head Todd & The Monsters, Solomon Burke, Jerry Jeff Walker and Dickey Betts and Great Southern.
The festival will include plenty of activities for youth. Walt Richardson, lead vocalist of the Morning Star Band and a coordinator for the event said, "Expect a very good time with a warm and friendly audience."
Drumming circles, a new feature at the festival, will be directed by Sule Greg Wilson of Tempe Preparatory Academy. Drums will be provided or participants can bring their own.
"(Children) are never afraid to try and the rhythmically challenged really have nothing to fear," Wilson said. "No experience is required."
Phoenix Day Child and Family Learning Center and Arizona Quest for Kids, beneficiaries of the festival, will host a Kids Village featuring several inflatable play structures.
Valley SuperCuts shops will offer $5 haircuts, with proceeds donated to the charities.
Overnight camping areas for tents and RVs will be available for $15 per night for tents, $20 per night for RVs. Camping and RV fees do not include a $5 parking fee per day. Power hook-ups and showers will be available.
Food, beverages, alcohol and souvenirs will be on sale. Vehicles may enter the tent camping area for unloading only; camping within vehicles in the tent area will not be permitted.
The event will be environmentally friendly. Everything that can be recycled will be, said Chris Hufford, a festival volunteer.
