More than 62 wigs later, the musical “Hairspray” opens Friday at Mesa Arts Center.

It’s 1960s Baltimore and the bouffant-alicious heroine, Tracy, is longing to perform on the dance TV program “The Corny Collins Show.” When she finally wins a spot, she rockets to instant celebrity. Things get a bit tangled though as Tracy falls in love while contending against the show’s ruling Barbies.

Local wig master Joe Navan provided all the wigs for the show, said Mesa Encore Theatre president Becky Martinez. Throughout the bee-bopping performance, most of the characters wear at least one if not multiple wigs, which are stored back stage on giant wig racks. Each rack holds 18 wigs, some of which are 26 inches high, Martinez said.

The troupe wearing these teased creations are semi-professional and amateur actors from across the Valley who donate their time and talents to the Mesa Encore Theatre, a community organization in its 75th season.

“We have college students who aspire to become professional actors or people like myself who do it because we enjoy it,” said Martinez, who plays three minor roles in the production.

According to Martinez, local actress Megan Power, who plays Tracy, nearly landed the same role on Broadway, before winning the leading lady role with Mesa Encore Theatre.

“We really have a great relationship with the actors,” Martinez said. “It gives them the opportunity to share their talents and the community the opportunity to enjoy high quality acting for a reasonable price.”
