For 33 years, Desert Botanical Garden has provided a serene Southwestern alternative to packing into the minivan and trolling for neighborhood Christmas lights: Las Noches de Luminarias. More than 8,000 handlit paper bags line the garden’s pathways, while soft lights twinkle in the trees and handbell choirs, Dickens carolers and other musicians play holiday music around nearly every bend. Hot cider, cocoa and a dinner menu are available.

>> Las Noches de las Luminarias is open 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and Dec. 27-30 at Desert Botanical Garden, 1201 N. Galvin Parkway, Phoenix. (Tickets have sold out for Dec. 23 and 26.) $20 adults, $10 children ages 3-12. Food and drink are available at additional cost. (480) 481-8188 or dbg.org.
