Building a fort doesn’t get any better than this.

Kids and families are invited Saturday and Sunday to help raise a city of cardboard on the mall outside Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.

Australia’s Polyglot Theater is bringing in thousands of cardboard boxes to supply the construction site, called “We Built This City.” The free activity is designed to inspire kids to use their energy and ingenuity to turn simple things into extraordinary creations.

A deejay will spin music during the building boom, and Polyglot performers will help children get started, perform as funny characters, introduce tasks that get kids working together, and facilitate free play.

The fun doesn’t stop once the tunnels, archways, towers and other edifices are constructed; at the end of the day, everyone gets to trample the city into a heap of rubble.

DETAILS >> 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Outdoors at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, 7380 E Second St. Free. (480) 499-8587 or www.scottsdaleperformingarts.org.
