Save the cereal and Saturday-morning cartoons; you can take weekend breakfast to new heights this month at Phoenix Zoo.

Instructors at the “Breakfast with the Giraffes” program will teach youngsters ages 2-6 all about the world’s tallest animals, from what they eat to how they use their purple-ish, prehensile tongues.

After a light morning meal of “people food” — and activities for the kids that include movement, discovery, reasoning, crafts, songs and play — visitors will go to the giraffe barn for a behind-the-scenes encounter with Jambo, Zuri, Makope, Hodari and Miguu — the gentle, spotted giants of the zoo’s African savanna exhibit.

Breakfasts are held weekends throughout January. Lunchtime programs with a zookeeper and trip to the giraffe barn, designed for children ages 6-10, are scheduled for February. Reservations are required to attend either event. Call (602) 914-4333 to sign up.

DETAILS >> Breakfast With the Giraffes is 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Jan. 13-14, 20-22, and 27-29. Lunch with a Giraffe Keeper is noon to 1:45 p.m. Feb. 11, 19 and 22. Phoenix Zoo, 455 N. Galvin Parkway. Breakfast is $45 per child-adult pair ($25 for zoo members); lunch is $75 per child-adult pair ($50 for zoo members). Reservations required. (602) 914-4333 or www.phoenixzoo.org.
