From “Someone to Watch Over Me” to “I Will Survive,” the story of women is told through more than 50 Top 40 tunes in the musical “RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women.” Created by Vanderbilt — and former Arizona State University — professor Dorothy Marcic, the Chicago Tribune called it a cross between “Oprah” and “Mamma Mia!” The show is based on Marcic’s book, “RESPECT: Women and Popular Music,” in which she analyzed all Top 40 female song lyrics since 1900.

>> “RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women” opens Wednesday and plays through Feb 12, 2011, at Herberger Theater Center, 222 E. Monroe, Phoenix. $45.50-$55.50. (602) 252-8497 or herbergertheater.org.
