Sally Ride, America’s first female astronaut, will host the second Valley of the Sun Science Festival on Saturday at the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University. The festival is open to girls in grades 5 through 8 — the age when many girls begin to drift from their natural interests in science and math.

The festival will feature keynote speeches by Ride and Laurie A. Leshin, ASU professor of geological science; local female scientists and engineers will offer Discovery Workshops. A street fair will include science demonstrations, entertainment, giveaways, a raffle and the chance to meet Ride. There is also an adult track for parents and educators.

Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the festival runs 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The $20 advance registration fee ($25 the day of the event) includes participation in the festival, materials, souvenirs, a snack, lunch and a raffle.
