Gilbert was a prime farming community known as the “Hay Capital of the World” in the early 1900s. Today, its a suburban town whose residents hail from all corners of the globe.

That diversity is celebrated Saturday at the town’s seventh annual Global Village Festival. The free event brings together scores of art demonstrations, educational booths, live stage performances and a merchandise “bazaar” — all highlighting the traditions of Mexico, New Zealand, China, Greece, Peru, Scotland and other countries.

Attractions include a Parade of Nations, where children will dress in the colorful attire of their ancestry; a community art project where you can decorate a puzzle piece to a map; and a Taste of the World area, where you’ll be able to sample a variety of ethnic foods.

In addition, donation boxes throughout the festival grounds will collect money for Japanese earthquake and tsunami relief efforts.
