No matter your preference — red, Golden Delicious or Rome beauty — record heat in Willcox means sweeter apples to pick at Apple Annie’s third annual Apple Harvest Celebration this weekend.

"The hot summer temperatures and abundant sunshine that we have throughout the growing season push the sugar levels in our fruit to some of the highest in any applegrowing area," said John Holcomb, owner of Apple Annie’s Orchard.

The festival begins 6:30 a.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday with an all-you-caneat breakfast of pancakes smothered in hot apple topping. Visitors can sample some of Anne Holcomb’s apple recipes, including homemade ice cream, pie and gooey caramel apples in anticipation of Halloween. Annie will also serve apple-smoked burgers 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Families can go out into the orchard and pick their own apples, peaches, Asian and Bartlett pears. The fruit hangs low on some of the trees, so even your toddler can pick her own fruit. Or, buy the fruit pre-picked by the pound and take a free hayride through the orchard. Hayrides run 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Southeastern Arizona Lupus Foundation and the Youth Haven Desert Ranch.

Take Interstate 10 to Willcox Exit 340. Turn west onto Fort Grant Road and drive 5 1 /2 miles to Apple Annie’s Orchard.
