Voters can’t sample the wares at the Sheraton San Marcos Resort’s seventh annual gingerbread house contest: Judging is on artistic merits alone, which may be bad news for the taste buds but good news for the waistline during the holiday season.

The south East Valley’s only resort delivers gingerbread house kits to fourthgrade classes in Chandler; the winning class receives a free pizza party and a mini history lesson about the resort. Last year’s winners, Mary Cooper’s class from Goodman Elementary School, created a miniature version of the Hogwarts castle from the Harry Potter books.

Voting begins today at the resort and continues through the holidays.

A good time to drop by and vote is Saturday night, after the Parade of Lights and the lighting of the Tumblewood Tree. The parade begins at 6:30 p.m. along Arizona Avenue from Chicago Street to Buffalo Street, and is followed by the tree lighting.
