Let ’em eat Bundt cakes

Suzanne Singer had tasted sheet cake, spongecake and poundcake, but up until four years ago she had never tried a Bundt cake.

That’s when a co-worker told her about a place called Nothing Bundt Cakes in Ahwatukee Foothills that specializes in butter cream cheese-drizzled Bundt cakes.

“I told her I wasn’t really a fan of the Bundt cake,” Singer says. “I thought, it’s just a Bundt cake. It’s no big deal.”

It took weeks of her co-worker raving about the delicious cakes before Singer was convinced to try.

“It was probably the best cake I ever tasted,” she says.

Singer started buying the cakes for herself, friends, family members and clients. They were so tasty and it was such a good gift idea, that Singer says she “literally

spent thousands of dollars” on the cakes.

And, in January, when the chain decided to expand its franchise, Singer quit her job to open her own Nothing Bundt Cakes in Scottsdale.

The Scottsdale location is the third franchise to open. The first store was started in 1998 in West Las Vegas by two friends who enjoyed baking in their spare time. The Ahwatukee Foothills location (4722 E. Ray Road) was the chain’s first expansion out of Las Vegas.

The cakes come in 10 flavors: chocolate chocolate chip, banana, lemon, carrot, marble, white-chocolate raspberry, cinnamon swirl, pecan praline, pineapple upside down and flavor of the month. The frosting is made with butter, cream cheese and high-end vanilla, and cascades down the sides of each cake.

“It’s nothing fancy,” Singer says. “It’s just a good-tasting, moist cake.”

And while the cakes may seem simple, a dedicated group of Bundt cake followers keeps the franchise thriving.

Cassy Rech lives in New River but used to drive all the way to Ahwatukee Foothills to get the cakes. Now that the Scottsdale location opened by her work, she says she’ll be stopping in for the cakes on a regular basis.

“I love the texture, the flavor. They’re always moist and never dry,” Rech says. “They’re spectacular.”
