Ash Wednesday: An anointing of the ashes of Ash Wednesday will be 7 p.m. March 5 at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 800 W. Ray Road. Lenten services will be 7 p.m. Wednesdays through April 9. Teachings by the Rev. John Schubert will be on how to avoid the “Deadly Distractions,” including fear, anxiety, busyness, apathy, prejudice and other behaviors. (480) 963-6105.


Breakfast and rummage sale: The junior and senior high youth groups of Love of Christ Lutheran Church, 1525 N. Power Road, will have a rummage sale and pancake breakfast today. The breakfast is 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall, with hot dogs and chips available after 10 a.m. The rummage sale will be 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds benefit the church’s social ministries. Sounds of music: Joan White and Mark Ramsey will perform vocal solos and duets 4 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church, 161 N. Mesa Drive. Joined by pianist Bea Towe and tenor Brad Helgason, they will also present works from “The Sound of Music” and Schubert’s “Mass in G.” A “Six-Act Vaudeville Show” will be in the second half. Black history: Black History Month will be celebrated with a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Matthew United Methodist Church, 2540 W. Baseline Road. Jews for Jesus: A team from Jews for Jesus will present its mobile music and drama, "The Liberated Wailing Wall," 7 p.m. March 11 at First Baptist Church, 4801 E. Brown Road. Participants will lead Jewish music with lyrics from Scripture and share Christian testimony. (480) 981-9684.

Church history: A lecture on the history of First Presbyterian Church of Mesa will be given by Howard Godfrey at 10 a.m. Monday at Mesa Historical Museum, 2345 N. Horne. It is the fourth in the Mesa Historical Society Guild’s lecture series on the history of churches in Mesa. Free. (480) 835-7358.

Grief support: The Christy Center for Loss and Renewal at St. Timothy’s Catholic Church, 1730 W. Guadalupe Road, will offer bereavement support groups for children, teens and adults. Children 5 to 12 will take part in Hearts; Life After Loss is for teens. Groups meet 7 to 8:30 p.m. for nine consecutive weeks, beginning Monday. Registration is required before sessions begin. Wedding comedy: Inspired by the film “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” a West Coast production company’s version of “Joey and Maria’s Comedy Wedding” will be staged 6:30 p.m. March 8 in the grand ballroom of Chaparral Suites, 5001 N. Scottsdale Road. Organizers of the fund-raiser for Temple Kol Ami, a Reform Jewish congregation, encourage attendees to be attired in “tacky and tasteless” apparel. Annual strings concert: The Fine Arts Strings will present its 12th annual concert 3 p.m. March 16 at Temple Solel, 6805 E. McDonald Drive. The Strings, conducted by Warren Cohen, featuring cello soloist Michelle Wooden, will perform music of J.S. Bach and C.P.E. Bach as well as Irish music. Alpha Course: The spring Alpha Course program, lasting 10 weeks, will meet 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays in the parish center at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Catholic Church, 10755 N. 124th St. The first night will include a welcoming dinner and a video with small group discussion on the topic "Who Is Jesus?" Yoga: Introductory yoga classes are being offered in the new social hall of Temple Kol Ami, 15030 N. 64th St. A professional instructor leads the one-hour classes at 9:30 a.m. Sundays and 1 p.m. Thursdays. School enrollment: Enrollment has begun for fall classes in second through sixth grades at Shepherd of the Desert Lutheran School, 9590 E. During their talks at the annual Missions Fiesta, the Hanscomes, veterans of 20 years of missionary work with the Christian and Missionary Alliance, will relate their challenges, including the September 2002 rescue of 100 children of missionary parents who were trapped amid civil strife.
