Perhaps it’s because this desert of ours is such a bizarre looking place already that the otherworldly spires, orbs and bursts of brightly colored hand-blown glass that have cropped up amid the flora of Desert Botanical Garden fit right in. Like Sonoran Desert natives cholla and ocotillo, the works of art are at home here, yet still mind-blowing as all get out.

Feast your eyes on them, and try to wrap your brain around them, through May 2014 at the Phoenix park, where 19 works by art world heavyweight Dale Chihuly are installed throughout the garden’s 55 acres.

To make the experience as enjoyable as possible, the garden has instituted timed ticketing sessions, designed to control the flow of guests, ensure adequate parking and improve your view. Call ahead to reserve your preferred session.

DETAILS >> Make reservations to visit 8 a.m. to noon, noon to 4 p.m. or 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily, except Christmas, at Desert Botanical Garden, 1201 N. Galvin Parkway, Phoenix. Admission is $22 for adults, $20 for seniors, $12 for students 12-18 and college students with i.d., $10 for children 3 -12. (480) 481-8188 or DBG.org/chihuly.

TIP

Admission is free 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. the second Tuesday of every month.
