A 42-year-old Chandler woman running a child care facility out of her home has been arrested on suspicion of child abuse in connection with a 17-month-old boy injured in her care, police said.

Kathy Albertson was arrested Saturday and then released while the case was forwarded to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for review, said police detective George Arias.

The investigation was initiated on Dec. 18, when Albertson was watching the boy at her home at 1914 W. Cortez Circle with at least four other children, Arias said. The child suffered an injury to the head, he said.

The boy was flown to a Valley hospital. He remained hospitalized Monday, Arias said.

Albertson initially told authorities the boy injured himself by bumping into a plastic bucket where toys were being kept, Arias said.

Howeve r, the nature of the boy’s injuries were not consistent with Albertson’s story, Arias said.

Michael Murphy, a spokesman for the Arizona Department of Health Services, said his agency is looking into whether Albertson should have been certified to watch the children at her home for money.

Parents of the other children in Albertson’s care were notified of the injuries.

Nobody answered the door at Albertson’s home Monday afternoon.
