Mill Avenue nightlife is getting a shot in the arm, thanks to two new clubs opening in downtown Tempe. Coconut Club Bar & Grill, a Hawaiian-themed bar and restaurant, opened Aug. 4 at 414 S. Mill Ave., a second-story space formerly occupied by Ziggy's and, most recenty, PA Connection.
Adorned with surfboards on the walls and flat-screen TVs, Coconut Club serves burgers, pastas and sandwiches. The venue doesn't offer a happy hour, but features $2 domestic bottles, $3 import bottles and drafts and well drinks.
After 9 p.m., only those 21-and-older are allowed. The female staff performs dance numbers, and there are flairtending shows at midnight Fridays and Saturdays.
‘‘It's a fun atmosphere,’’ says general manager Chris Barker, who plans to hire DJs for the club's small dance floor.
Meanwhile, just down the block, Suite 301 is scheduled to open next weekend in the former Owl's Nest location on the southeast corner of Mill and Fifth Street.
Owl's Nest general manager Steve Baltz purchased the second-story property and gutted the former ASU hangout.
Baltz says Suite 301 will have ‘‘more of a groovy lounge feel’’ with music from the ’70s to present, black and white leather furniture, rich dark woods, platforms for people to dance on, flat-screen TVs and a large patio with a misting system, a bar and round beds.
‘‘Inside it's going to be dark and loungy, and outside is going to look like something you would see in South Beach,’’ he says.
Suite 301 will serve burgers, sandwiches, chicken strips, buffalo shrimp and quesadillas.
