50 years ago, “To Kill A Mockingbird” starring Gregory Peck debuted on the silver screen. This month, Gilbert’s Hale Centre Theatre is commemorating the American classic with a stage production directed by longtime Childsplay actor and Arizoni-Award winner D. Scott Withers.

This timeless story of truth and integrity takes place during the Great Depression in fictional Maycomb, Alabama, where lawyer Atticus Finch is assigned to represent Tom Robinson — a black man accused of a crime punishable by death. Robinson’s only hope, Finch believes in his innocence and defends him regardless of race and local prejudice.

Told from the perspective of Atticus’ inquisitive daughter Scout Finch, played by Red Mountain High School freshman Zoe Zamora, the story is one of friendship and love transcending racial lines.

Composed entirely of local actors, the 17-member cast includes Gilbert resident Rob Stuart (Atticus Finch) and Dale Mortensen (Jem Finch) of Mesa, said Hale Theatre General Manager Cameron Tryon.

Other cast members include Arizona State University graduate Kleven Craig (Tom Robinson), who plans on moving to California to begin a film career, and Casey Pettyjohn, who has appeared as Tiny Tim in “A Christmas Carol” at Broadway Palm and performs frequently with East Valley Children’s Theatre.

Parents are advised that though the show is appropriate for all ages, the play deals with issues of race and intolerance in the 1930s South, and may raise questions with children 12 and younger.

DETAILS >>  7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 3 p.m. Saturday; show runs through June 30. Hale Centre Theatre, 50 West Page Ave., Gilbert. $22 for adults, $10 for youth 12-18. (480) 497-1181 or www.haletheatrearizona.com.
